As a writer, one of the most exciting moments is seeing your work come to life on screen. The process of adapting my books and columns has been a journey filled with challenges and surprises, but ultimately, it has been an incredibly rewarding experience.

When I first heard that my memoir, Wild, was going to be made into a movie, I was thrilled. But I was also a little apprehensive. How could a two-hour film capture the essence of a book that took me years to write? I soon realized that adaptation is not about replicating a book on screen. It’s about capturing the spirit of the story and finding a way to make it work visually.

One of the biggest challenges in adapting Wild was condensing the story. The book covers months of my life on the Pacific Crest Trail, but a movie can only be so long. The filmmakers had to make some tough choices about what to keep and what to cut. But in the end, I was impressed by how well they captured the heart of the book.

When it came to adapting my columns for screen, I faced a different set of challenges. In a column, I have limited space to tell a story and to convey the emotions and experiences that inspired it. But in a TV show or movie, there is more time to explore those themes in depth.

The show Tiny Beautiful Things, which is based on my advice column of the same name, took a different approach to adaptation. Rather than trying to replicate the columns word for word, the show uses the letters as a starting point to explore larger themes of grief, love, and toughness. The result is a show that is both faithful to the spirit of the column and also stands on its own as a powerful piece of storytelling.

Overall, the process of adapting my work for screen has taught me a lot about storytelling and collaboration. It’s not about controlling every aspect of the adaptation, but about trusting the filmmakers to bring their own vision to the project. And when it works, it’s truly magical to see your words come to life in a new and different way.
